Locked in is a grassroots organization comprised of people passionate about mental health awareness, substance abuse treatment and social justice.
The curriculum in the Unlock Five Steps was unique in the sense that some of the exercises
delved into an emotional component where each of us was able to witness first-hand how the
adverse effects of social injustice, inequalities, shame, and guilt that impacted each of us, and
how these stigmas manifested in our lives, and how those similarities paved the road to a life in prison. The curriculum was so transformative and life changing I decided to take on the role of a coach to cascade the teachings onto others.
After participating in the Unlocked 5 Step Curriculum, I gained a deeper understanding of my emotions by really identifying my wants and needs. The socialization tree opened up my eyes to see how negative thoughts can produce harmful behaviors. Each week, we were assigned to write out a situation that triggered a negative emotion and as I did this process it helped me get clear of how I’m feeling. Doing this work helped me let go of any bitterness, anger, or resentments I held towards others. This group has allowed me to get in touch with my emotions which I truly appreciate.
Locked In’s curriculum helped me to understand the deep-rooted resentments that I was still holding on to. It opened me up to a level of vulnerability that I did not think was possible. I have never seen or heard of anything like the “Empathy Round” where all participants listen compassionately to the designated speaker. This for me changed the way I received information and reciprocated it. It changed the inner conversations from selfish comparisons to avoid my pain, to selfless compassion and sharing pain through experience. I’m grateful to have taken this program, it has given me the tools to begin repairing the trauma in my life
Locked In offers several mental health, substance abuse, and transcommunal programs to help each of your needs. Individual and group coaching is available.
